Questions of Money and Sacred Economics

Rainer Maria Rilke – Live the Questions Now

…I would like to beg you … to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

Where to start? That is what I’ve been asking myself this past few weeks as I have been deepening my exploration of my relationship with money. I am so, so tired of scarcity thinking and feeling. I have an abundance of community, connection and creativity. How can it get any better than this? By having a more compassionate, loving, creative, abundant, even beautiful realtionship with money. By loosening the tangles and knots I have around money. Money feels like a relationship I just don’t get. I don’t get how a person has to “earn a living”. What is that about? Or the “cost of living”. Is that crazy or what. To think that as amazing beings of light we need to earn a living? Who thought that up?

For the next while, however long my soul calls me to delve into the subject, I will be exploring and living the question of money on this blog. Questions such as:

What else is possible? (For exampleRather than a money tangle, can I have a money river?)

How can I create a more loving, abundant, generative relationship with money?

If I see all the world as sacred, how can I create a sacred relationship with money?

How can I see money as something beautiful and amazing?

My guide for this journey is the book Sacred Economics, Money, Gift and Society in the Age of Transition by Charles Eisenstein. The book is organized in three sections:

  • The Economics of Separation
  • The Economics of Reunion
  • Living the New Economy

I recognized right away that the (increasing) tension I feel around money is that while I am practicing living in a world shaped by unity consciousness, cooperation,  connection, compassion and creativity our entire economic system is designed to foster competition and separation. No wonder I am in such a tangled knot. No wonder I just don’t “get” money at a heart level.

Come, join me on this journey of discover, of imagining a new economy, imaging a joyful relationship with money, of imagining a world where there is more than enough for everyone. It is spring, come, plant the seeds of a new reality and water those seeds with questions.
